Fraud is possible in any situation where a person or company that is doing business with the government acts dishonestly. No industry or workplace is immune.
The False Claims Act is a key weapon in fighting fraud committed by companies and people who do business with the government. It allows a person to file a lawsuit, on behalf of the United States government, and share in any money that is recovered from the defendant. The lawsuit is known as a “qui tam” action and the person who files the lawsuit is known as a “relator” or “whistleblower.”
The types of fraud listed above have been the subject of whistleblower/qui tam lawsuits and government investigations under the False Claims Act.
